THE COMPLACENT FRIEND
The storm lasted all night. Selênis, with her beautiful hair, had come to spin with me. And she stayed, for fear of the mud. Squeezed together, we filled my small bed.
When two girls sleep together, sleep stops at the door.
"Bilitis, tell me, tell me, who is your beloved?"
And she slid her leg along mine, caressing me softly.
And she said close to my mouth:
"I know, Bilitis, who it is you love. Close your eyes. I am Lykas."
But I answered, touching her:
"So can I not see that you are a girl? This is nothing but a joke in poor taste."
But she went on:
"If you close your eyes, you will know that I am truly Lykas. Feel his arms, his hands..."
And, tenderly, in the silence, she enchanted my reverie with her singular illusion.
